If you know anything about Peru, you will understand and want to see Ancient Peru and Machu Picchu. Depending on how much time that you have there is much to see and visit in Peru.
In the north of Peru there are many different places from different ancient cultures. For example, Senor de Sipan which was part of the Mochica culture near the city of Chiclayo in the province of Lambayeque. This fascinating site features stunning displays of Mochica clothes featuring gold head dressing that are amazing to see.
Rather than a mountainous rugged archaeological site surrounded by jungle, Chan Chan is a historical ruin on the desert coast near Trujillo. The ancients city was built by the Chimu civilization and is known as the largest mud brick city in the world.
South of Lima, etched into the desert floor are hundreds of ancient line drawings from the Nazca culture that lived in the area. The purpose of the Nazca Lines is still a mystery with more drawings still being discovered. The geoglyphs occupy an area of 1000 square kilometers and there are nearly 300 different figures that include plants, animals like hummingbirds, cats, monkeys and spiders.
At Coricancha you can find an incredibly preserved. The Spanish conquered the city changing the architectural landscape forever. See the incredibly preserved Ancient Inca Sun Temple. Under the church, there are 5 Inca Temples as the where the Inca worshipped the sun, moon, sunbeam, rainbow and stars. The Spanish destroyed some of these temples to build the Santa Domingo .
Above Cusco city is one of the most famous ruins in Peru, Sacsayhuaman. The ruin features enormous stones. Archaeologists estimate that the construction took around 90 years to complete. They also believe that it was a military fortress used to protect Cusco. Some of the huge stones at the site weigh over a 100 tons. Every June Inti Raymi is held here, this is to celebrate the Sun God Inti.
Is an ancient site that contains an Intihuatana or sundial and a Temple of the Sun. Pisac has enormous verdant terraces. At both ends of the terracing are two complexes with towers, the site has some of most beautiful mountain views. Below is the ancient town of Pisac, worth a visit for the market.
The town has some of the most impressive functioning aqueducts and fountain out of all the Inca ruins in Peru. This site features large terraces with a temple of the sun at the top. The structure contains giant stones brought from an ancient quarry some 6 kilometers away.
The site remains unfinished and was the last stronghold of the Inca Empire where the Spaniards lost a battle with the Incas in 1537.
Machu Picchu is the most famous of all the Inca sites in Peru. It is located on a mountainside high in the Andes. The site was constructed by Patchaquetec in the mid-1500s. It is thought that it was then abandoned 100 years later due to the difficulty with getting water to the site. Another theory is that Machu Picchu was a country estate used by royalty to get away from the cold in Cusco.
Today thousands of people visit the site every year either by train or by hiking. You shouldn’t miss out on visiting Machu Picchu while in Peru. Book in advance to avoid disappointment.
