For those who want a taste of truly authentic Peruvian life in the Andes, our homestay at Huchuy Qosqo is a great option for you. It’s a wholly unique experience for travelers, as a local family welcomes you into their home. They feed you, tuck you in (not really), and ensures that you stay safe and warm during your visit.
If you are looking for an opportunity to integrate with Peruvian culture that many people don’t ever get to see. Consider our homestay at Huchuy Qosqo is the perfect opportunity for you.
You will arrive at the homestay in time for lunch. It will be ready and waiting for you after you have dropped off your bags in your room and had a little time to freshen up. It’s up to you if you want to eat with the family, but normally that they will give you privacy during this time.
After lunch you will head back to the Huchuy Qosqo ruins to enjoy your guided tour of the area.
After you have had your fill of the ruins, we head back to the homestay where we wait for dinner. After dinner we head to bed. The next day after breakfast we hike down to the small town of Lamay in the Sacred Valley. Then you can continue to Machu Picchu or head back to Cusco, whichever you have chosen.
The homestay in Huchuy Qosqo will vary a little depending on which homestay you will stay in, as there are a few available. This will depend on how many people there are in your group, which homestays are available, and a myriad of different contributing factors.
However, it’s not worth getting too worried about the slight differences in each different homestay. Each of the homestays are small cottages made from adobe. This is typical building material made from straw and mud.
Adobe walls are typically very thick and so help to insulate the house, keeping you warm throughout the night. With the help of plenty of thick blankets. There are no radiator or any external heat sources here. You will be sharing a room unless otherwise stated differently. The rooms serve between 2 and 4 people.
You will also share a toilet with the host family. Thanks to recent renovations, you are likely to end up with hot showers. This is a new thing in the region, and for a remote village like this, the height of luxury. It wasn’t so long ago that the toilets up here didn’t flush, so a hot shower is really a revolutionary input.
The family that you will stay with usually ranges between one single person and a family of five. Of course, this is just one of the variants between each of the houses that you may end up staying with.
Most of the families up here are farmers, growing potatoes, wheat, corn, and various herbs. All have animals of some kind. Nearly all the families in this area have their own guinea pigs, as well as llamas and alpacas. Some will also have cows, sheep, chickens, and so on.
These families typically only speak Quechua, the indigenous language of Peru. This is very common in the Andes mountains, especially in rural villages. Don’t fret, as your guide is fluent in Quechua and English (and Spanish of course), so he can translate for you. You might want to share stories with your host family.
Your host family is happy to talk to you about their way of life and how they run their homes.
During your stay you will enjoy three different meals with your host family. These will, of course, vary depending on meal, on the season, and perhaps even which kind of animal your host has. If they have chickens then you’re far more likely to enjoy chicken for dinner than you are beef.
A typical menu may consist of a local corn soup to start. Next a traditional rolled chicken, with some tea to finish the meal off. You might also enjoy some trout from one of the farms at the bottom of the mountain.
Most people who visit the Huchuy Qosqo homestay are blown away by the authentic homes and their precarious location on the side of the mountain. The experience is authentic and really exciting for many travelers who want to experience the real Peru.
