Getting from the airport to the city center can be a daunting task for even the most seasoned of travelers. Cusco airport is quite close to the center, but it can still offer a daunting task. You do have a few options to choose between for getting into the center.
Traveling from Cusco airport to the center of the city is not very far as the airport is located close to downtown. There are several ways to get to the center of the city where most of the hotels are located. Here we will give you some ideas on how to get from the airport to Cusco City.
Transfer
If you have booked a tour package with a local travel company in Cusco than most like they will include a transfer. They will be at the airport waiting for you after your have collected your backs outside the airport. Most will have a company sign with your name or company logo. This will part of your package but do ask if this is included.
A Taxi from the Airport
There are many taxi drivers waiting just outside the terminal, offering rides from the airport to your accomodation downtown. Most have offical tags around their neck with their name and ID number. This generally will cost you a bit more. They have cars waiting in the carpark and will carry your bags to the car for you. Always agree on the price before you enter the taxi and never in US$ always in the local currency.
Taxis Outside the Airport
If you are on a budget this may be the option for you. Walk outside the airport gates and you will see a crowd of taxi drivers waiting to take you anywhere that you want to go. Dont look scared as they will charge you more, be confident and get the best price.
You can also walk a bit more down the road away from the crowds and just hale a taxi passing by. This is the cheapest option but be careful and keep to the main road and take care of your luggage.
The Public Bus
There is no airport bus in Cusco, so if you want to do it on a budget, you’ll have to find a public bus. Just head out the airport and turn right. Walk along until you arrive at a bus stop. When a bus comes along, ask them “al centro?” and if they say yes, get on.
It’s a good idea to keep an eye on your maps as you do this so you don’t get totally lost or miss your stop. If your spanish is up to it you can ask for a shout out when you arrive at your stop, but I wouldn’t rely on it.
Also, if you have a lot of luggage then this option is a fool’s errand. Likewise at peak times. This includes 1pm and 3pm as that is when the schools let out. Keep an eye on your valuables.
This is for the really intensely budget conscious. It’s not particularly recommended but in the interests of catering to all types of traveler. You can walk from the airport into the town center. It will take you a while but it will be free. And you’ll get to stretch your legs after the flight. It will take you around an hour and not recommended if you have heavy luggage.
This is how you are going to be able to travel without stress. It is a more expensive option than the above (except getting a taxi in the airport) but to be able to just get off your flight. Get to your accommodation without having to argue with a bunch of taxi drivers?
The only thing left to do is find a company that offers that (as your luck would have it, this is a service that we offer), check their reviews, and have a chat with one of their travel advisors to make sure that this is the right company for your needs.
Getting from Cusco Airport to the city center is something that almost all travelers will need to do upon their arrival to the ancient Inca capital. Make sure that you don’t get scammed or a dodgy cab driver as your opening experience to Cusco!
