The question on everybody’s lips is how do I get to Puno, well there are 4 ways to get to Puno, so let’s get into the best ways to travel.
You can’t fly directly to Puno, there is no airport there. You can however fly to Juliaca and take either a one-hour bus, taxi or private transport to Puno. This is not the most popular option as you have the added hassle of finding transport to Puno. If you go with this option, we recommend you use LATAM.
The Belmond Andean Explorer, this is the most expensive option, you will get your own suite with a bed, sofa and a table. This is perfect for the train lovers.
This is the most popular option; the bus takes around 7 hours from Cusco. There are many different companies that travel this route. The double decker buses are very comfortable. You can get to Puno also from the city of Arequipa which is a 6 hours bus ride.
From most travel agents you can hire a private car. This is an expensive option but great for families or groups. The advantage is that you can stop and see sights along the way.
As in most of the high Andes, there are 2 seasons. The Dry and the Wet. The Dry season runs from April to October and this is the busiest season with thousands of tourist arriving into the Andes to take advantage of the dry weather. This season is also cold especially in the Puno area. You will need to bring your warm jackets.
The wet season is from November to March and this means that most days you will experience wet weather. The temperature is a little warmer but it will still get cold. In this season there are less people visiting so the attractions.
A short ride from Puno on Lake Titicaca is the fascinating Uros Islands. This is an experience like no other, the islands are made completely out of the reeds that grow in the lake. The Uros people have lived this way for hundreds of years. Have a guided tour where you will be explained why the people live there and how they maintain the islands. They also make their boats and houses out of the same reeds. The Daily activities include fishing, taking care of the live stock and maintaining the islands.
The locals make souvenirs for the tourists that come to the islands. This provides an income to improve the lives of the people.
Located on the main square the Cathedral of Puno. This lovely baroque structure was designed by Simon de Astro and completed in 1757. A devastating fire in 1930 destroyed much of the interior carvings. The Cathedral today has a marble alter with an image of Jesus.
Take a tour out to the rock Island of Taquile. The boat ride will be around 2.5 hours, a chance to relax and take in some stunning lake views. Walk up a stone path to the top of the island. The island is famous for the colorful fabric and knitwear the locals make by hand.
About 20 miles from Puno is the Sillustani Cemetery. Here you can see the Chullpas funerary towers. These were built in the middle of the 15th Century by the Qolla people, who would bury their dead inside the towers along with their possessions to help with the journey to the afterlife. The site has an impressive view of the lake.
Jiron de Lima is in central Puno and is a pleasant stroll from the main square to the Pino Park. The walkway features shops, arts and crafts, restaurants and hotels. At the end of the street is Pino park a pleasant place to sit and watch the world go by.
In February there is a wonderful festival in Puno called the Festival of the Virgen de la Candelaria. Between the 2nd and the 12th, Puno is full of folk dancing, drinking and colorful costumes on parade. You can find the sculpture of the virgin in the church of San Juan Bautista.
